The European Union (EU) member states have voted in favor of Commission Regulation (EU) on the application of control & mitigation measures to reduce the presence of acrylamide in food. 

This proposal reduces the presence of acrylamide in food, a known carcinogenic substance present in fries, crisps, bread, biscuits, and coffee. 

The proposal requires that food business operators (FBOs) must apply mandatory measures to reduce the presence of acrylamide, proportionate to the size and nature of their establishment. 

The agreed-upon text will now be sent to the Council and the European Parliament. The two institutions will have three months to examine it before final adoption by the Commission. Entry into force is expected to be in spring 2018.
